Hoefer was born as the son of Hugo and Ann Hoefer (née Metzler) as Adolph Hoefer in Hanau, Hesse. The family emigrated to New York City in the United States in 1926 . Hoefer played basketball at Queens College before joining the Wilmington Bombers in the New York State Professional Basketball League , a local professional league. During the Second World War he served in the Coast Guard . At this point he changed his name from Adolph to Charles Henry. Before and after his war effort he played again with the Wilmington Bombers, after which he moved to the Toronto Huskies in the newly formed Basketball Association of America (BAA). After 23 games for Toronto, he moved to the Boston Celtics , for which he completed another 42 games. He then played in local professional leagues until he retired in the early 1950s and started working for the Ministry of Agriculture . In 1969 he moved to South Dakota , where he died on June 12, 1983. He had a wife and two children.
