Chasmanthe is a plant genus in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae). The only three species occur only in South Africa .

Description and ecology

Inflorescence of Chasmanthe bicolor

Chasmanthe species are tuber-forming, perennial , herbaceous plants that reach heights of about 60 centimeters. They resemble gladioli in their growth , but form yellow to red, slender, curved and tubular flowers from autumn to spring, the upper bracts are elongated, the anthers protrude from the flower. The seeds are bright orange in color. Nectar birds act as pollinators , birds are also suspected to spread the seeds.

Locations

Chasmanthe species thrive on well-drained, moist soils in bushland or on the edges of forests.

Systematics and distribution

Chasmanthe are particularly close to the Crocosmia , and also to the gladioli. The genus Chasmanthe was established by Nicholas Edward Brown . The generic name Chasmanthe is made up of the Greek words chásma for "throat" and ánthe for "blossom" and refers to the elongated tubular shape of the flowers.

All three Chasmanthe species are only found in South Africa.

The genus Chasmanthe includes three species:

  • Chasmanthe aethiopica ( L. ) NEBr. ( Syn .: Antholyza aethiopica L. , Antholyza floribunda Salisb. , Chasmanthe peglerae N.E.Br. , Chasmanthe vittigera (Salisb.) NEBr. , Petamenes aethiopica (L.) E. Phillips , Petamenes peglerae (NEBr.) E. Phillips , Petamenes vittigera (Salisb.) E. Phillips ): It occurs in the South African provinces of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape . Your stocks are considered stable.
  • Chasmanthe bicolor (Gasp. Ex Vis.) NEBr. (Syn .: Antholyza bicolor Gasp. , Petamenes bicolor (Gasp. Ex Ten.) E. Phillips ): It occurs only at three localities in McGregor and Swellendam in the Western Cape. It thrives in open woodlands near rivers . Their populations are endangered by farming, dam building and invasive plant species.
  • Chasmanthe floribunda (Salisb.) NEBr. (Syn .: Antholyza aethiopica sensu Burm. F. , Antholyza praealta Redouté , Chasmanthe floribunda var. Duckittii G.J.Lewis ex L.Bolus , Chasmanthe floribunda (Salisb) NEBr.. Var. Floribunda , Petamenes floribunda (Salisb.) E.Phillips ) : There are no more subtaxas. It occurs in the South African provinces of the North Cape and Western Cape. Your stocks are considered stable.
