Chasmanthe bicolor is a species in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae). It isnative towestern South Africa.

description

Chasmanthe bicolor grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of about 70 to 90 centimeters. This geophyte forms tubers as persistent organs. The basal, sword-shaped, dark green leaves are about 1 meter long.

It blooms from mid-winter to early spring. On the upright spiked inflorescence there are laterally protruding flowers. The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flower is threefold and tubularly curved. The six orange bracts are unevenly shaped, the upper ones are longer than the lower ones. The stamens are fused Roehrig. The pollination is carried by birds. There are fruit capsules formed. The orange seeds are thought to be spread by birds.

Systematics

A first description of this species was made in 1845 under the name Antholyza bicolor by Guglielmo Gasparrini in Michele Tenore : Catalogo ... Orto Botanico di Napoli ... , p. 78. However, DJ Mabberley found out in 1984 that this species was carried out under the same name Roberto de Visiani in Orto Botanico di Palermo , 56, page 134 was published a little earlier, namely in 1842. The species was later placed under the name Chasmanthe bicolor in 1932 by Nicholas Edward Brown in Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa , 20, p. 273 in the genus Chasmanthe . Other synonyms for Chasmanthe bicolor N.E.Br. are: Antholyza aethiopica L. var. bicolor (Gasp. ex Vis.) Baker , Antholyza aethiopica var. minor Lindl. , Petamenes bicolor (Gasp. Ex Vis.) E. Phillips .
