Chatchai Paholpat ( Thai : ชั ช ชัย พหล แพทย์ , * April 30, 1947 ) is a Thai football coach and former player . Along with Charnwit Polcheewin, he is one of the most respected coaches in Thailand.

Career

Player career

Chatchai probably spent his entire football career at FC Bangkok Bank . He played for the club in his youth since 1963 and later moved to the senior team. He competed for this until 1976. During this time he was three times champion and won the Queen's Cup with the club in 1970 .

As a national player he was active for Thailand from 1966 to 1975. His greatest success was his participation in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico. He came to two missions.

Coaching career

Beginnings

Chatchai's first coaching station was at his former club, Bangkok Bank. He spent three years there as a coach, but could not win a title with the team. 1992 joined the staff of the national coach of Thailand, where he was responsible for youth teams as national coach. He was also the assistant coach of the senior team and the U-23 . At that time he coached players such as Kiatisak Senamuang , Dusit Chalermsan and Tawan Sripan between the ages of 16 and 19. These players were later part of the so-called Dream Team , which would later lead Thailand to two semi-finals at the Asian Games .

FC Osotspa

In 1996, Chatchai became the coach of Osotspa M-150 . To this day, the club's successes are closely linked to its name. He took over the club in his first Thai Premier League season. Although he was relegated to the Thailand Division 1 League with the club , Chatchai managed to lead the club to direct promotion a year later. In 1999 he led the club to its first great success. He managed to lead the team to the final of the Thai Cup. There he met his former club, the Bangkok Bank . The final was lost with 1: 2. In 2002 he led the club to the first runner-up in club history. In 2002 he was the first to honor the club: he and his team won the Queen's Cup final. He should do this two more times. In 2003 and 2004 he was able to successfully lead the team to defend their title in the competition. The runner-up in 2002 qualified for participation in the AFC Champions League , but the team was eliminated after the group stage. He was able to lead the club to two third places in 2003/04 and 2004/05. 2006 was again only the runner-up.

During his time as a coach at Osotspa, he took over the national team as head coach for three months in 2004 and looked after the national team during the 2004 Asian Cup . He also failed to lead the team past the group stage. As with all other participations before, Thailand remained without a win.

Vietnam - Thailand - Vietnam

After his stint at Osotspa, he went to Vietnam in 2007 and trained Hoàng Anh Gia Lai . He had already received an offer from the association two years earlier, but turned it down because his mother was seriously ill. By taking over the post as head coach at HAGL , he continued the club's tradition of mainly arranging Thai coaches. He was able to lead the club to third place in the V-League . After just one season he went back to Thailand and took over the FC Customs Department . He could not prevent the club from relegating to the second division and was sacked at the end of the season. At the beginning of 2009 he followed the call of his former club Hoang Anh Gia Lai and went back to Vietnam. However, he did not take on the role of head coach, but rather assistant coach. He was supposed to support his Thai colleague Dusit Chalermsan in his duties as head coach.
