Origin and meaning
The origin of the name Chaudhuri ( Hindi चौधरी caudhrī , Urdu چودھر, Bengali চৌধুরী caudhurī ) is dark; she is sometimes referred to as the "possessor of four" or from Sanskrit चक्रधर cakradhara ( Prakrit cakradharī ) as "carrying a disc", i.e. H. "Ruler, Governor", interpreted.
In pre-colonial times, the honorary title Chaudhuri in northern India initially referred to a village head, a clan chief or a landowner in the rank directly below the zamindars (large landowners), who was also entrusted with tax collection in his Pargana (district) in cooperation with the Qanungo and the Amīn . In British India , the title was also used to designate the foreman of certain professional groups for carrying out public works, such as market supervision.
