Abu Sayeed Chowdhury
Abu Sayeed Chowdhury ( Bengali : আবু সাঈদ চৌধুরী , Ābu Sāīd Caudhurī ; born January 31, 1921 in Nagbari , Bengal , British India ; † August 1, 1987 in London ) was a politician from Bangladesh .
biography
In 1971 Chowdhury was a representative of Pakistan in the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva , when East Pakistan's efforts to gain sovereignty came on December 16, 1971 . He then announced his support for the new country and appointed himself High Commissioner in the United Kingdom .
On January 12, 1972, he became President of Bangladesh. Although he was elected for a five-year term in April 1973, he resigned on December 24, 1973 after disagreements with Prime Minister Mujibur Rahman .
In 1975 he was briefly foreign minister in the government under President Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad . He then returned to Geneva, where he coordinated foreign aid for Bangladesh.
From 1978 until his death there he was a member of the UN sub-commission for the prevention of discrimination and for the protection of minorities . In 1985 he was also chairman of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
