Shahabuddin Ahmed

Shahabuddin Ahmed ( Bengali : শাহাবুদ্দিন আহমেদ , Śāhābuddin Āhamed ; born February 1, 1930 in the village of Pemoi, Netrakona District , Bengal , British India ) is a politician from Bangladesh .

biography

Ahmed first entered the civil service of Pakistan in 1954 , but switched to the judiciary in 1960.

Just over a month after the independence of Bangladesh , he was on 20 January 1972 on 16 December 1971 Judge of the Supreme Court ( High Court ) was appointed the new country. In January 1990 he became President of the Supreme Court ( Chief Justice ).

After the resignation of Hossain Mohammad Ershad after nationwide protests organized by the opposition , he became President of the Republic by virtue of the constitution on December 6, 1990 . As such, he gained worldwide recognition for holding the country's first fair and free election , which on March 20, 1991, resulted in Khaleda Zia as the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh. After Abdur Rahman Biswas took office as the new President on October 10, 1991, he returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice and retired in January 1995.

In July 1996 he was elected President on the proposal of the new Prime Minister Hasina Wajed and took up this office on October 9, 1996 as the successor to Biswas. On November 14, 2001, he handed this office over to his elected successor, AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury .
