Abdur Rahman Biswas

Abdur Rahman Biswas (born September 1, 1926 in Shaistabad , British India ; † November 3, 2017 in Dhaka ) was President of the Republic of Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party .

biography

Biswas was initially taught at the college in his home village. He then studied at the University of Dhaka , where he received his Bachelor and Master of Arts in history and a Bachelor of Laws . First he became chairman of a local cooperative bank and initiated the establishment of various educational institutions. For his contribution to the cooperative movement in Bangladesh and various social and economic activities, he was honored by the then Pakistani government in 1958.

In 1962 and 1965 he was an elected member of the East Pakistani regional parliament. From 1965 on, he was East Pakistan's Parliamentary State Secretary for four years. In 1967 he was their representative in the 22nd General Assembly of the United Nations . In 1979 he was elected to the national parliament of Bangladesh ( Jatiyo Sangshad ) and initially acted for one year as Minister for National Affairs regarding the raw material jute and from 1981 to 1982 as Minister of Health. From 1991 he was speaker of the parliament. After parliamentary democracy was reinstated in the country, Biswas won the scheduled elections and was elected President of the Republic of Bangladesh on October 8 of the same year . His term of office ended properly on October 8, 1996.

Biswas belonged to Sunni Islam . He died in Dhaka in November 2017 at the age of 91.
