Mohammad Zillur Rahman ( Bengali জিল্লুর রহমান Jillur Rahamān ; born March 9, 1929 in Bhairab , Kishorganj district ; † March 20, 2013 in Singapore ) was a Bangladeshi politician , president and leading member of the Awami League .

Life

Zillur Rahman attended high schools in his home country and graduated from the University of Dhaka with a law degree . As early as 1952, Zillur Rahman became politically active as part of the Bengali language movement. In 1970 he was elected as a candidate for the Awami League in the Pakistani general parliament. Due to the resulting majority, West Pakistani leaders felt compelled to cancel the election - otherwise an Awami government would have threatened all of Pakistan. This suppression of the separatist movement resulted in the Bangladesh war and then further in the country's independence from Pakistan.

Rahman continued to be politically active: During the war as a member of the government in exile, in the newly formed state from 1972 as General Secretary of the Awami League. In the 1973 parliamentary elections, Rahman was able to win a seat. After the assassination of Mujibur Rahman , he was imprisoned for four years by the coup junta.

When Awami came to power again, Rahman was a minister in the government of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001.

Zillur Rahman was the country's president from February 12, 2009 until his death.
