The ChemCologne region

ChemCologne is an association based in Cologne , whose aim is to further develop the attractiveness and competitiveness of the chemical region and to make it even better known among domestic and foreign investors. The cities of Aachen , Bonn , Cologne and Düsseldorf form the geographic core of the ChemCologne region.

history

The initiative was founded on February 26, 1999 through an agreement in principle. Founding partners were the companies InfraServ Knapsack (today YNCORIS) and Bayer AG , as well as the Cologne Chemical Employers' Association, the Cologne / Bonn Region and Neighbors eV, the Ministry of Economics, SMEs, Technology and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Society for Economic Development NRW GmbH. In 2002 the initiative was converted into a registered association. This legal form still exists today.

economy

North Rhine-Westphalia is the most important industrial location in Germany. The chemical industry is the branch of industry with the highest turnover in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Of the total German annual sales of the chemical industry, sales in the ChemCologne region ( administrative districts Cologne and Düsseldorf) amounted to 30.2 billion euros in 2017 and thus almost 70% of the total sales of the chemical industry in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia or around 22% of the total German chemical sales. In addition, over 70,000 employees work in the chemical industry. The region includes the Chempark at its locations in Leverkusen, Krefeld and Dormagen, the Knapsack chemical park , the Cologne-Merkenich chemical park, the Henkel site in Düsseldorf, the Evonik site in Lülsdorf, the pharmaceutical and chemical park in Wuppertal and the Oberbruch industrial park has nine powerful settlement areas for the chemical industry. Shell Oil Deutschland GmbH also operates the Rheinland Raffinerie , the largest refinery in Germany, in Cologne-Godorf and Wesseling .

aims

The purpose of the association is to secure and strengthen the chemical industry in the Rhineland. ChemCologne pursues the following goals in particular:

  • National and international PR work to increase awareness of the chemical region
  • Active location marketing for investments in the chemical region
  • Development of the environmental conditions for industrial settlements
  • Promotion of the network structures of the chemical industry and support of operational cooperation between the chemical industry and the regional economy
  • Increasing innovative strength in the Rhineland by intensifying the transfer of knowledge and creating networks with regional universities as well as start-up and technology centers

In 2014 ChemCologne published a study on chemical logistics in the Rhineland. With the handover of the study to Michael Groschek , Minister for Building, Housing, Urban Development and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most important key statements were placed with the relevant political actors. The sudden closure of the Leverkusen Rhine Bridge for all freight traffic over 3.5 t in December 2012 was a serious intervention in the logistical activities of many companies in the chemical industry in the Rhineland. The discussions about the often ailing infrastructure in the Cologne-Düsseldorf area quickly made it clear that there are no reliable data and facts on the special needs of the chemical industry in terms of logistical requirements. The study provides an insight into chemical logistics supply and demand as well as the transport links in the chemical region of Rhineland .

ChemCologne has been holding its cooperation day since 2017 under the motto "Startup meets chemical industry". The exchange between startups and chemical companies is to be increased. The digitization is to initiate a core theme of the event format to new and innovative business innovation.

My position is great!

During the 2015 summer vacation, ChemCologne carried out the “My position is great!” Campaign for the first time, aimed at schoolchildren aged 16 and over. Member companies of the association (in 2015 Currenta , Evonik Industries , InfraServ Knapsack , Ineos Cologne and Shell Rheinland Raffinerie ) made management positions available for one day for which the students could apply. The winners of the competition then took over the management positions for one day.

Since its successful premiere in 2015, the “My position is great!” Campaign has taken place every year, with several other member companies such as Alfred Talke , Currenta , Evonik Industries , InfraServ Knapsack , Lanxess , Shell Rheinland Raffinerie , AkzoNobel and the Rhein-Erft Academy participating and offers schoolchildren the chance to get to know various job profiles in the chemical industry.
