The festival of Chenep-sha (also day of sand fetching ) has been documented since the Old Kingdom under King ( Pharaoh ) Niuserre . It is related to the birth of Horus and the goddess Wosret , attested to in the Middle Kingdom in Thebes , who was venerated as the protector of the youthful Horus.

Old empire

The festival of Chenep-scha was not on the usual first day of the new moon , but included the ritual of filling the eye of Horus on the second day of the lunar month. The Menchet festival followed a day later on the third day and symbolized the dressing of the moon .

12th dynasty

In the 12th Dynasty under Sesostris III. also called the day of Anubis' sand fetching on his mountain in the pyramid city of Sesostris II, the Blessed . The Sesostris II pyramid of Al-Lahun , with its location, was traditionally assigned to the Mount of Anubis .

From the diary of the mortuary temple of Sesostris II ( Papyrus Berlin 10248 ) is in the 14th year of Sesostris III's reign. the announcement is noted in the lunar calendar for the 18th Achet II on the second lunar day. Since in the festival calendar of the acrobat troupe from the 35th year of reign of Amenemhet III. the Menchet festival was scheduled for the second month of Achet without a date, the lunar date had not yet been announced at the time the festival calendar was drawn up.
