Trained in Rome, Chiaveri went to St. Petersburg in 1717 , where he was commissioned by Tsar Peter the Great to manage the library of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Kunstkammer . In 1727 he came to Warsaw, where he was to design a palace for Jacob Heinrich von Flemming ; but this was thwarted by the death of his client.

In the 1730s Chiaveri entered the Saxon service. In 1734 he belonged to the retinue of August III. at his coronation as Polish king in Krakow . From April 1, 1736 to September 30, 1749 he led the establishment of the Catholic Court Church in Dresden . During this work, numerous Italian craftsmen came to Dresden, who formed the so-called Italian village . Chiaveri left Dresden after intrigues before the completion of the church, which was completed in 1755 under Johann Christoph Knöffel and Julius Schwarze . Nevertheless, it is considered to be Chiaveri's main work.

From 1750 Chiaveri lived in Rome, from 1760 in Foligno.
