Chicaloma is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Chicaloma is the central place of the canton Chicaloma and the second largest place in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Irupana in the province Sud Yungas . The village is located at an altitude of 1677  m about fifteen kilometers as the crow flies northwest of the Río Boopi , a source river of the Río Beni .

Chicaloma is located in the Bolivian Yungas on the eastern slope of the high mountain ridge of the Cordillera Real . The region has a distinctive time-of-day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than in the course of the seasons.

The annual average temperature of the region is 21 ° C (see climate diagram Chulumani), the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly between 18 ° C in July and 22 ° C in December. The annual precipitation is about 1150 mm, the monthly precipitation is between about 20 mm in the months of June and July and more than 150 mm from December to February.

Chicaloma is located about 150 kilometers by road east of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 3 leads north-east for 60 kilometers to Unduavi , from there the unpaved route 25 branches off in a south-easterly direction and reaches Irupana via Chulumani after 97 kilometers . From there an unpaved road leads to Chicaloma .

The village has a high proportion of Afro-Bolivian population. They are descendants of people displaced from Africa who were brought to Bolivia by the Spaniards to work in the mines and were later relocated to the Yungas.
