Chip Foose

Chip Foose (born October 13, 1963 in Santa Barbara , California ) is an American vehicle tuner , designer and builder . He runs a hot rod shop and is the star of the series Overhaulin ' , which is broadcast on the TV channel DMAX , among others .

Life

Foose collected at the age of seven years first experiences with cars when he was in his father's workshop ( Project Design ) in Santa Barbara ( California could) help. In 1982, spurred on by the designer Alex Tremulis, he began studying at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena , which he had to finish after two years due to financial problems. Foose worked for ASHA Corporation , an auto parts and accessories maker, for four years and then returned to the Art Center to complete his degree. After graduating in 1990, he was employed by the Sterenberger Design company. He also worked part time for Boyd Coddington's Hot Rod Shop . In 1993, Foose was poached by J Mays , chief designer at Ford Motor Company . Foose quit Sterenberger Design , but was then convinced by Boyd Coddington to work for him. Foose subsequently worked his way up to becoming the managing director of Coddington's company. While at Coddington, he was responsible for the design of several hot rods, such as the Boydster I and II .

When Boyd Coddington's Hot Rod Shop was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1998 , Foose and his wife Lynne founded their own company called Foose Design in Huntington Beach , California. Upon leaving, Foose fell out with Coddington after taking several Coddington employees into his company. The American Hot Rod show deals with this topic in an episode.

After the US television station TLC broadcast a documentary in 2003 about the design and construction of a Ford Thunderbird (called Speedbird ) modified by Foose in 2002 , attention grew for Foose. In 2004, TLC began broadcasting the television series Overhaulin ' , in which Foose and his team restored and modified one classic car per episode. In 2006, the model car manufacturer Johnny Lightning produced a series of model cars under the name JL Full Throttle based on creations by Foose Design. At the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA 2006) it was announced that Foose and Ford have signed a contract to build vehicles based on the Foose design. The first model from this collaboration was presented to the public at the 2007 New York Auto Show.

In 2007, Foose advised the architects of the $ 275 million Detroit MotorCity Casino, which was completed in late 2007 . He designed several styling elements that can be seen in and around the casino.

Foose became involved with the Progeria Research Foundation after his sister died of the disease . He is now the Foundation's Vice President.

Foose continues to run his company Foose Design, also works as a design consultant for Ford, General Motors and Chrysler and appears in Overhaulin ' . He co-produces the series. He lives in southern California with his wife and two children.

Awards

Foose enjoys widespread recognition for his designs and creations:

  • He was inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame as the youngest member in 1997 , the Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Car Museum Hall of Fame in 2002, the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame in 2003 and the San Francisco Rod and Custom in 2005 Motorcycle Hall of Fame .
  • It won America's Most Beautiful Roadster Award in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2006 . Some of the award-winning vehicles were designed by Foose and then built by other vehicle manufacturers such as Boyd Coddington, Barry White and Bobby Alloway.
  • Foose won the Autorama Ridler Award in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2015.
  • Foose also received The Good Guys Street Rod of the Year Award in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001 .
