Choco Heros microlepis is a hitherto little-studied freshwater fish from the family of cichlids , which are endemic in Rio Baudó in westandinen Colombia occurs. The species has never been caughtsince it was first described in 1960.

features

Chocoheros microlepis is relatively slender and reaches a body length of about 19 cm and is an excellent swimmer with its long caudal stalk and large caudal fin. The fish are of a silvery basic color; There are six broad, dark transverse bands on the sides of the body. The fifth contains a dark side spot. Another, narrow and vertical spot lies on the base of the tail. The scales on the sides of the body have dark edges that together form a fine mesh pattern. The dorsal fin, especially the section supported by hard rays, is low. Chocoheros microlepis differs from all other related heroine cichlids in the high number of scales along the sideline (50 to 52 vs. less than 35), which is regarded as a derived ( apomorphic ) characteristic through which the species and genus can be diagnosed . The thick lips and the slightly lower mouth indicate that Chocoheros microlepis grazes the growth of rocks. His eyes are relatively high.

Systematics

The species was described in 1960 by Georg Dahl under the name Cichlasoma microlepis . The type epithet refers to the small scales ( microlepis = small scales). The genus Chocoheros was introduced in 2016 , with Chocoheros microlepis as the only species. The genus name is made up of Choco and Heros . Choco is an alternative name for the Embera- Wounaan , an indigenous people in the range of the genus in Colombia; Heros is a genus of cichlids. Chocoheros is the sister genus of Mesoheros , from the same area but with a wider range.
