Chris Anderson (musician)
Chris Anderson (* 26. February 1926 in Chicago , † 4. February 2008 in Manhattan , New York City ) was an American jazz - pianist .
Life
Chris Anderson was self-taught and began his music career in Chicago clubs on the Southside in the mid-1940s ; he played u. a. in the Pershing Ballroom with Sonny Stitt , Von Freeman and with Howard McGhee and Charlie Parker ( One Night in Chicago on Savoy , 1950) and as accompanist for the singers Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington . In 1955 he joined the club The Beehive a . a. with Max Roach , Clifford Brown and Sonny Rollins . In the 1960s Anderson worked in New York, where he recorded an album for Vee Jay in 1960 with bassist Bill Lee and drummer Art Taylor ; In November 1961 the album Inverted Image followed , which was released on Jazzland . Contributing musicians were Bill Lee, Walter Perkins and Philly Joe Jones . He also worked as a resident pianist in clubs in Chicago and accompanied guest musicians such as Gene Ammons and Stan Getz .
He is remembered as the teacher of Herbie Hancock , who expressly praised him: "After hearing him play just once, I begged him to let me study with him." For many years he was able to do so due to physical disabilities - he was since he was 20 years old went blind and had numerous broken bones as a glass bone victim - couldn't find a job as a musician. In the 1980s and 1990s, three more albums appeared on the Mapleshade and Naim labels . Anderson also played with Sun Ra / John Gilmore ( At the Village Vanguard , 1991) and Clifford Jordan in the 1990s . In 1997 the duo album None But the Lonely Heart was created with Charlie Haden .
