Britta Boehler

Britta Böhler (born July 17, 1960 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German - Dutch lawyer and politician ( GroenLinks ).

Life

Youth and education

Britta Böhler comes from a social-democratic and pacifist family . She grew up in Freiburg im Breisgau and attended the Goethe-Gymnasium there . She was shaped by the criminal trials against the Red Army faction in the 1970s , during which she was particularly impressed by the eloquent lawyer Otto Schily .

From 1979 to 1984 she studied law at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where she did her PhD. jur. Britta Böhler also studied economics from 1979 to 1980 and political science from 1980 to 1982 at the University of Freiburg. From 1985 to 1989 she did her legal clerkship in Munich.

Lawyer

From 1989 she worked as a lawyer in Frankfurt am Main, where she was still focused on commercial law. In 1991 she moved to the Netherlands and was sworn in as a lawyer in Amsterdam in 1994 . In 1995 Britta Böhler became a partner in today's law firm Böhler Franken Koppe Wijngaarden . She mainly deals with criminal cases.

She sees herself as a political lawyer. Britta Böhler became known through her criminal mandates. In 1999 she represented Abdullah Öcalan in two proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). In 2002 she became the defense lawyer for Volkert van der Graaf for his attack on Pim Fortuyn . She represented Margarita von Bourbon, the daughter of Irene von Oranien-Nassau , in the affair of the alleged spying of her client by the Dutch royal family. This caused a special stir in the royal family, as Böhler is considered a Republican.

At a hearing in the Dutch Parliament on December 10, 2003, she stated that, in her opinion , the anti-terrorism legislation of the Netherlands was a step towards criminal law of conviction . She was also the lawyer for the Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali during her expatriation proceedings.

Böhler has been a professor at the University of Amsterdam since 2012.

politics

Britta Böhler was involved in offices at Greenpeace from 1994 and headed its Dutch section from 2000 to 2003. She gave up this position in connection with the criminal case for the killing of Pim Fortuyn . From 2007 to 2011 Böhler was a member of the First Chamber of the States General , the upper house of the Dutch parliament. She was there deputy group leader of her party GroenLinks . Böhler had to hand in her German passport for this position.

Author

Her first novel, The Magician's Letter, about three days in the life of Thomas Mann, was published by Aufbau Verlag in February 2014 and in Dutch ("De beslissing") by Cossee Uitgeverij Amsterdam in September 2013.
