Christ the King Church

The Christ König Church is a Catholic church in Salzgitter-Bad , a district of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony . As a branch church, it belongs to the parish of St. Marien , in the Goslar-Salzgitter deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . history

Due to the influx of workers as part of the development of the Reichswerke AG for ore mining and ironworks "Hermann Göring" , which was founded in July 1937 , the number of Catholics in the area of ​​Salzgitter, which has been evangelical since the Reformation , rose sharply. From 1938 new housing estates were built in the area around the village of Kniestedt, which existed until 1938 . As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics also increased in Salzgitter-Bad due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire , so that in addition to the services in the St. Marien Church, services were also held in various schools .

A parish and youth home was built on a plot of land acquired in 1951 in the north of Salzgitter-Bad, today's Christ-König-Haus (Breite Straße 84). Since 1 November 2006, the Christ the King Church heard as a branch church to the parish of "St. Marien ", the parish" Christ König "was abolished at this time. Since July 1, 2007, the church has belonged to the then newly established Deanery Goslar – Salzgitter, previously it belonged to the Deanery Salzgitter, founded in 1952. Since February 2015, the former rectory, which was converted for this purpose, has also been used by the "Christ-König" kindergarten.

Architecture and equipment

Nave

The church, built according to plans by the architect Philipp from Braunschweig , with its free-standing cross-crowned tower in which five bells hang, is around 182 meters above sea level . A cross with a crown is located above one of the two main entrances, symbolizing the church's patronage .

The single-nave church with a concrete skeleton and brick infill that is visible from the inside offers 320 seats. The simple windowless chancel is illuminated from above and dominated by a hanging cross. The tabernacle stele with the eternal light is set up on its back wall . To the left and right of the chancel show statues , in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed, Jesus Christ with his Sacred Heart and Mary , the mother of Jesus, with the baby Jesus . 14 Stations of the Cross have their place on the side walls of the church. Under the organ loft there are two confessionals with a semicircular floor plan and, three steps lower, the baptistery . A crucifixion group adorns the cover of the baptismal font . The pipe organ is a work of the Lower Saxony organ building company Gaulke.

Kindergarten "Christ-König"

The “Christ-König” kindergarten is located at Gablonzerstraße 23, around 500 meters from the church. Individual kindergarten groups are also located in the Christ-König-Haus and in the former rectory.

The kindergarten was founded by the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent von Paul in Hildesheim and was initially housed in wooden barracks on Gablonzerstrasse. In 1958/59 a massive kindergarten building was built on the same site. In 1969 the kindergarten changed to the sponsorship of the parish of Christ-König, in 1990 the kindergarten was expanded to the current size. With the abolition of the parish “Christ-König” in 2006 the parish “St. Marien “the sponsorship. Since January 2007 the kindergarten has belonged to the family center “FiZ” (“Family in the Center”), an amalgamation of Catholic institutions in Salzgitter.
