The Christian-Dietrich-Grabbe-Gymnasium , along with the Leopoldinum and the Stadtgymnasium, is one of three urban high schools of roughly the same size in the district government town of Detmold . It bears the name of the poet and playwright Christian Dietrich Grabbe (1801–1836) in memory of one of the city's most important citizens. His bronze bust stands in front of the entrance to the old building in the schoolyard.

history

Today's high school goes back to a teachers' seminar . Kasimire von Anhalt-Dessau married Simon August von Lippe in 1769 and moved to Detmold. Here she was very committed to elementary schooling and education. Kasimire was apparently familiar with the ideas of Johann Bernhard Basedow , who had founded the Philanthropinum in her home town of Dessau . Even after her untimely death in 1778, Simon August pursued her plans against the resistance of the state parliament. On November 30, 1781, the Lippe teachers' seminar was officially opened in the presence of the sovereign.

At the beginning the school was housed in the orphanage on Bruchberg . One of the patrons and teachers was General Superintendent Ferdinand Weerth from Lippe . Weerth complained about the inadequate conditions in the school building, and the teachers' seminar moved to the former nursing home on Schülerstrasse while he was still alive. The school expanded, and in 1888/89 a new building was built on the so-called “Hambruch”. The architect was the Detmold city architect Karl Leopold Petri . Today the building is the old building of the Grabbe-Gymnasium and is a listed building.

A change in teacher training through the imperial constitution of 1919 heralded the end of the teachers' seminar. After the last degrees, the school was converted into an advanced high school in 1925 . During the Second World War , lessons were only possible to a limited extent at times: many pupils volunteered for military service , and a hospital was set up in the school building. Due to the lack of coal in the winter of 1939/40, classes were canceled completely. In 1944 the advanced high school became a German home school . In May 1946, the advanced high school resumed regular operations. As the first grammar school in North Rhine-Westphalia, the school introduced a musically emphasized upper school branch at the end of 1958. To emphasize the school orientation, it was decided in 1966 to name the institute Christian-Dietrich-Grabbe-Gymnasium on the 130th anniversary of the poet's death .

As a result of expansion measures in the 1980s, the new building with specialist rooms for languages and natural sciences as well as the concert hall were added. In 1996, the architecturally striking extension with classrooms and a modern physics wing was inaugurated. The school is conveniently located in the immediate vicinity of the city center. More than 1000 students are currently being taught by around 80 teachers.
