In 1816 he became an assistant teacher at the Leipzig Citizens' School. In 1817 he went to Switzerland as a teacher at the Fellenberg Institute in Hofwil (near Bern ). He returned to Leipzig in 1819 and worked for a year as a tutor for the banker Wilhelm Gotthelf Ernst Seyfferth († 1832). In 1820 he went to the university church as a master's degree and afternoon preacher . In 1821 he became pastor in Oppach , in 1834 in Weigsdorf (near Zittau) , where he died in 1846 after suffering for four years.

After his death, Bähr's hymns were published in an anthology by the Preachers' Conference in Hirschfelde . Albert Knapp included 23 of these songs in his Evangelical Song Treasury for Church and House (Stuttgart 1850).
