Christian August Freyberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian August Freyberg (born November 10, 1684 in Stolpen (Saxony), † January 15, 1743 in Dresden ) was rector of the St. Anne's School in Dresden from 1719 until his death , which at that time was one of the three higher schools in Dresden was.

Life

Freyberg's grandfather was a cloth maker in Bischofswerda . He was able to enable two of his sons to study: Christoph Freyberg (1651–1722), father of Christian August Freyberg, became pastor in Stolpen, his brother Jeremias Freyberg (1657–1724) became pastor and superintendent in Kamenz .

After Christian August Freyberg received his preparatory training at the municipal Latin school in Stolpen, he moved to the grammar school in Zittau, which was headed by Christian Weise , in 1700 and the University of Leipzig as a student in the philosophical faculty in April 1701 . Freyberg heard history lectures from Johann Burckhardt Mencke . After earning his master's degree in 1704, he returned to Stolpen and worked as a tutor in Kamenz and other places in Upper Lusatia in the following years .

From 1713 to 1715 Freyberg stayed as court master in Weißenfels . During this time he went on some educational trips and got to know Christian Weidling . After his return to Stolpen, Freyberg worked as a private tutor again and possibly also taught Christian Friedrich Henrici .

On December 15, 1719 Freyberg became the rector's office of St. Anne's School in Dresden. With his work began a heyday of the Annenschule, which previously only received poor support from the Dresden Council. Just five years after taking office, Freyberg issued new school regulations in 1724, with which he increased the number of lessons, reduced religious instruction and instead included the subjects of political history, genealogy, geography, German orthography, stylistics, poetry and speech exercises. In his lessons Freyberg followed the maxims of his former teacher Christian Weise .

With the recognition of the Annenschule as a Lyceum in 1724 , the number of students rose continuously in the following years, so that in 1727 a third teaching position was approved. In the same year, Freyberg received a new cantor in the way of Johann Christian Gerstner (1675–1753) , who also served as the second teacher.

In the 1730s and 1740s in particular, the Annenschule enjoyed a high reputation, the merit of which can be traced back directly to its principal. Freyberg, who is known beyond the borders of the Electorate of Saxony , had letters to Johann Gottlob Frenckel , Carl Friedrich Degenkolb and Georg Ehrenfried Behrnauer . From the Danish privy councilor Friedrich Emanuel von Kötzschau he received a call as high school principal in Oldenburg , which Freyberg refused.

Christian August Freyberg died at the age of 58 on January 15, 1743 after 23 years of service as rector of the Annenschule.

Works

Freyberg's works, which he wrote in both German and Latin, include historical writings, news from the St. Anne's School and sermons.

He is considered to be the author of the hymns Blessed, blessed are the dead, and go to your room, and Lord, I have mistreated .
