Christian Rogelio "Chucho" Benítez Betancourt (born May 1, 1986 in Quito , † July 29, 2013 in Qatar ) was an Ecuadorian football player who played on the position of the striker .

Career

society

"Chucho" Benítez was born as the son of the successful Ecuadorian international striker Ermen Benítez . He joined the CD El Nacional from the capital Quito in 1997 and played there in the youth teams. On February 29, 2004 he made his first division debut and prevailed as a regular player in the 2005 season. With seven goals he contributed to the championship title for El Nacional in the season finale (2005 there was a championship title in Ecuador every half year) and was also a permanent fixture in the team in 2006, with which he won the championship again (this time for the entire season). In the second half of 2007 he moved to Santos Laguna in Mexico. Here he was champion of the Clausura tournament in 2008. He contributed ten goals to the second round championship . In 2008 he was named the best player in the Primera División . In July 2009 he moved like his compatriot Giovanny Espinoza on loan to Birmingham City in the English Premier League .

In July 2013, Benítez moved to Qatari first division club al-Jaish for a transfer fee of around twelve million euros . He died in Qatar on July 29, 2013, before he could play for the club for the first time. The cause of death is said to have been an out of control appendix and peritonitis. He was hospitalized with severe abdominal pain and died of cardiac arrest.

National team

Christian Benítez was also discovered for the Ecuadorian national team in 2005, where he made his debut on August 17th, after having successfully passed through the youth teams. His surprising nomination for Ecuador's contingent at the 2006 World Cup in Germany showed that he was being bet for the future . At the age of 20 he was the youngest World Cup player in his country and played a World Cup game (the second half of the third group game against Germany). In Ecuador's first international match after the World Cup, a friendly against Peru on September 7, 2006 at the Giants Stadium , he scored his first international goal to mean 1-0 (final score 1: 1). In 2007 he took part in the tournament for the Copa America and scored a goal in the 3-2 defeat in the first round match against Chile .
