Christian Blisse (full name: Georg Christian Blisse ; born January 29, 1823 in Wilmersdorf ; † December 30, 1905 ibid) was a wealthy farm owner, then a rentier and patronage elder in Wilmersdorf near Berlin .

Life

The Blisses were an extensive farming family in the Wilmersdorfer area. Christian Blisse was the eldest son of the farmer Georg Christian Friedrich Blisse (1797-1832) and his wife Charlotte Marie, née Kosinsky.

Due to the need for building land for the growing city of Berlin, numerous farmers in the surrounding area made their fortunes. Since Blisse waited longer than other farmers to sell the land, he became relatively rich and thus belonged to the so-called " millionaire farmers ", which earned him the nickname "Million-Blisse". He was married to Auguste Schierjott (born September 17, 1845 in Charlottenburg , † August 20, 1907 in Deutsch-Wilmersdorf ). The couple remained childless, but raised a foster daughter.

Blisse bequeathed three million marks to the city for a Protestant orphanage, the construction of which began in 1908 and opened in 1911 as the Christian and Auguste Blisse Foundation on the Wilhelmsaue , in the center of the former village of Wilmersdorf, on the property of the former family estate of the Blisses. Today a day care center is operated in this house.

Honors

He was the holder of the Order of the Crown, 4th class. The couple's grave in the Wilmersdorf cemetery is listed as an honorary grave for the State of Berlin.

Blissestrasse, which has been named after the couple since 1947, leads through the family's former fields in Wilmersdorf. The subway station Blissestraße on line 7 (today: U7), which opened here in 1971, was named after this street .
