Christian Clages

Christian Clages (born June 21, 1955 in Berlin ) is a German diplomat , and since August 2018 head of the German representation in the Palestinian Territories , based in Ramallah ( West Bank ).

Life

After graduating from high school , Clages began studying history and economics in 1976 , which he completed with a master's degree. Clages is married and has three children.

career

In 1985 he joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his training as an attaché, worked at the embassy in Saudi Arabia from 1987 to 1989 . After a subsequent assignment at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City , he was head of the German Humanitarian Aid office in Zagreb between 1992 and 1995 . He then worked in the Foreign Office and during this time (from 1996 to 1998) also worked in the office of the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina . Between 1999 and 2003 he was head of a working group in the Federal Chancellery .

After a subsequent assignment as head of the political department in the permanent mission to NATO in Brussels , he was ambassador to Rwanda between 2006 and 2009 . Christian Clages was Ambassador to Senegal from 2009 to 2013 and Ambassador to Lebanon from 2013 to 2015 . From 2015 to 2018 Clages was the special representative for the Sahel zone .

Since August 2018 he has held the position of head of the German representation in Ramallah, which is located in the Palestinian Territories in the West Bank .

Christian Clages and the Consul General of France in Jerusalem, Pierre Cochard , jointly awarded the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law to Daoud Nassar , the founder of the "Tent of Nations" , on December 13, 2018 . This project has been working for understanding between Israelis and Palestinians for almost 20 years.

Foreign Office examines anti-Israel statements

On Twitter , Christian Clages, with his verified account “Germany in Ramallah”, added a “Like” heart to numerous tweets that spread anti-Israel and anti-Semitic propaganda. The Federal Foreign Office has announced consequences because of the statements made by its top diplomat in the Palestinian territories that are critical of Israel. The contents are "unacceptable", contradict the attitude of the federal government and are "not tolerated". The "Likes" have been deleted in the meantime.

Even after he took office, his welcome on the homepage was criticized, which says: “I am looking forward to representing the Federal Government in Palestine in the coming years .” The territory of the Jewish state lies in the middle of “Palestine” and Germany maintains Israel As is well known, a German embassy in Tel Aviv, on whose embassy main page it correctly says: "I am pleased to be able to serve the Federal Republic of Germany as ambassador in Israel".
