Peter Beerwerth

Peter Beerwerth is a German diplomat who has been Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Mission of Germany to the Disarmament Conference since 2018 . Before that, he had been head of the representative office in Ramallah since 2015 and thus representative of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories .

Life

After graduating from high school, Beerwerth studied English , musicology and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of St Andrews . He also studied business administration at the German Employees Academy in Bonn .

In 1988 Beerwerth began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after its graduation was permanent representative of the Consul General in Detroit between 1990 and 1992 and then from 1992 to 1995 consultant for public relations at the headquarters of the Foreign Office . This was followed by a position as head of the economic service at the embassy in Egypt between 1995 and 1999 and as deputy head of the permanent representation of Germany at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague from 1999 to 2004 .

Beerwerth was then deputy head of the Department for Disarmament of Chemical and Biological Weapons in the Federal Foreign Office between 2004 and 2008 and coordinator for multilateral affairs and police development in the Afghanistan / Pakistan Task Force of the Federal Foreign Office from 2008 to 2010, before becoming head of the Unit for G7 - Global Partnership against Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Federal Foreign Office. This was followed by a secondment between 2011 and 2012 as political advisor to the commander of the Bundeswehr Operations Command , Lieutenant General Rainer Glatz , before he returned to the Federal Foreign Office in 2012 and there until 2015 as head of the Department for Disarmament of Chemical and Biological Weapons, G7 Global Partnership, Excellence Program biological safety was active.

In 2015, Beerwerth succeeded Barbara Wolf as envoy head of the representative office in Ramallah and thus representative of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Palestinian territories. In 2018 he was replaced there by Christian Clages and took over as ambassador to head the Permanent Mission of Germany to the Disarmament Conference.
