Bernhard Christian Friedrich Davids (born April 14, 1822 in Stöfs near Lütjenburg , † January 17, 1876 in Hamburg ) was a German teacher.

Live and act

Christian Davids was a son of the Dutchman Christoph Hartwig Davids (1791–1873) from Nortorf , whose ancestors had immigrated from Holland. The mother Elisabeth Catharina Friderica, née Classen, (1802-1860) also descended from two Dutch people.

Contrary to the tradition of his family, Davids attended the teachers' college in Segeberg from 1840 . After the exam in 1843 (2nd batch with very laudable distinction) he worked as a teacher in Sühlen until 1845 , then in Haßmoor until 1847 . After passing an exam, he got a new job in Rendsburg .

Davids was considered a staunch Republican and philanthropist. During his time in Haßmoor and Rendsburg, he protested against the social circumstances under which workers lived on estates like Kronberg , Emkendorf or Sehestedt . He managed the business of the Bovenau workers' association , which together with the republican workers, welfare, civic and trade associations formed a general board. Seats on this committee were held by Hans Reimer Claussen , Engel, R. v. Neegard, Dr. Rausch and Theodor Olshausen .

The board of directors and the association used the democratic newspaper Das Volk to disseminate their positions in public. Harro Harring published the paper until 1849 , then Friedrich Lexow and Carl Baurmeister. Christian Davids described the complaints of the farm workers in the newspaper and was imprisoned on May 1, 1850 for this reason. He spent his imprisonment at the Rendsburg Fortress, among other places. In the subsequent proceedings, Hans Reimer Claussen took over David's defense. The detention ended after the explosion of the Rendsburg powder tower.

After his release, Davids went back to teaching. Relieved of office in 1851, he went to Altona , where he ran the Kroymann private school. From 1867 to 1871 he ran his own school in Neumünster and then went back to Altona, where he opened the Riemann-Davidsche Stadtschule.

Among teachers from Schleswig-Holstein, Davids was regarded as a good teacher and mathematician. In the field of mathematics, he created a new edition of Kroymann's arithmetic book .
