Hans Reimer Claussen (born February 23, 1804 in Fedderingen , † March 14, 1894 in Davenport , Iowa ) was a German politician in Holstein and later in the United States .

Origin and education

Claussen first attended the Fedderingen village school until 1819. From 1819 to 1820 he was employed by the parish registry in Hennstedt. From 1820 to 1823 he attended the Meldorfer School of Academics and then studied law at the University of Kiel from 1824 to 1829 .

After successfully completing his studies and his legal clerkship, he worked as a lawyer in Heide until 1834 and as a lawyer in Kiel from 1834 to 1851.

Engagement in Schleswig-Holstein politics

Claussen became involved early on in the Schleswig-Holstein movement, which resisted the Danish efforts to incorporate the free duchy of Schleswig with its German population into the Kingdom of Denmark . From 1841 to 1846 Claussen was a member of the Holstein assembly of estates for Neustadt / Heiligenhafen and in 1847 a member of the Holstein assembly of estates for Schönberg.

From 1848 to 1849 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly (Paulskirche) for Dithmarschen / Wilstermarsch and in 1849 a member of the rump parliament in Stuttgart for Schleswig-Holstein. From 1849 to 1850 Claussen was also a member of the constituent state assembly of the joint duchies of Schleswig and Holstein in Kiel and in 1849 a member of the Schleswig-Holstein state assembly for Marne.

In 1851, after the unsuccessful uprising of the German Schleswig and Holstein in the Schleswig-Holstein war against the Danish King Frederick VII , he avoided the arrest of the Danish occupiers by emigrating to Davenport / Iowa in the summer. He was expressly excluded from an amnesty in 1852 by the Danish government. His departure from Europe took place via Hamburg to New Orleans .

Engagement in US Politics

In the USA, Claussen initially ran a law firm in Davenport from 1852 to 1871 (with an interruption from 1855 to 1858). From 1855 to 1858 he directed the construction and operation of a steam grist mill in Lyons , Clinton County , Iowa. From 1858 to 1862 he also served as a Justice of the Peace in Scott County until 1870 he was elected a member of the Senate from Iowa for Senate District 22 (Scott County) for the 13th and 14th General Assemblies. Claussen remained a senator until 1874.

In 1870 Claussen presented in the Senate a. a. states that an amendment to the constitution of the state of Iowa on the subject of prohibition (prohibition of the sale of wine, beer and cider when the law is applied individually by each county) was passed in the House of Representatives from Iowa and in the state senate in two different versions and is therefore illegal. As a result, the 1871 Amendment was ruled unconstitutional by the Iowa Supreme Court .

Before his death in 1894 Claussen visited his old homeland Schleswig-Holstein again in 1871 and 1874, after it was freed from the Danish occupation by Prussia and Austria in 1864 - under the mandate of the German Confederation - and had become part of the German Empire in 1871 To experience the dream of a united German Schleswig-Holstein.
