Christian Eltester (born October 23, 1671 in Berlin ; † May 5, 1700 ibid) was a German architect, engineer and draftsman.

Life

Eltester was a son of the Elector Brandenburg court donor Christian Eltester (1630-1697). He received lessons in painting and mathematics from Rutger von Langerfeld . A scholarship from Friedrich Wilhelm enabled him to stay in Rome, where he turned completely to architecture. He received further training from Mattia de Rossi and by working at Palazzo Ludovisi, today's Palazzo Montecitorio (today's seat of the Italian Parliament). For his achievements he was awarded the Order of the Golden Spur in 1694 , which was presented to him by Duke Comitibus Sforza. At the same time he was appointed papal Count Palatine .

Further trips to Naples, together with his brother Otto Christoph , followed. In 1696 he returned to Berlin via Venice, Vienna, Prague and Dresden. There he was initially a drawing teacher for Friedrich Wilhelm's daughter, Princess Luise Dorothea Sophie. From May to August 1697 he stayed in East Prussia together with the Prussian court. In that year he was appointed court architect and engineer with responsibility for the area around Königsberg . From May to July 1698 he stayed again in Königsberg and Warsaw. Further trips to the Netherlands, England and Warsaw followed, interrupted by stays in his official area in Königsberg. At the end of 1699 he fell ill and died at the age of 29 on May 5, 1700 in Berlin.

A bundle of study drawings from his travels has been preserved in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin . One of the few buildings built according to his designs is likely to be Grünhoff Castle (now Russian: Roschtschino) near Cranz (now Selenogradsk) in East Prussia. Grünhoff Castle is one of the few remaining aristocratic castles in the former East Prussia.
