Christian Friedrich Helwing (born January 19, 1725 in Köslin ( Western Pomerania ), † January 2, 1800 ) was a German bookseller and mayor.

Life

Christian Friedrich Helwing was the son of a Köslin brewer and businessman. He attended schools in his hometown and in Stolpe. In 1743 he fled from Prussian advertisers to Halle (Saale) . Here he studied theology and philology, philosophy and fine literature with Georg Friedrich Meier and history with Friedrich Wiedeburg for three years with Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten , Johann Georg Knapp and Johann David Michaelis . He then became a private tutor with the Oertzen (noble family) on Blumenow and accompanied his pupil to Lemgo to the local school. In 1747 he continued his studies in Halle and one year later became a proofreader in a book printer. In 1747 he was appointed rector of the Lemgoer Gymnasium.

In 1755 Helwing married the only daughter of the bookseller Johann Heinrich Meyer in Lemgo. Two years later he gave up his rectorate and took over the publishing house from his late father-in-law. Later he bought the Förster bookstore in Hanover and Pyrmont and also opened a bookstore in Duisburg . In 1758 Helwing was elected mayor of Lemgo and later appointed to the council by his sovereign Simon-August von Lippe-Detmold for his services . After his death in 1785, he was co-guardian of the state government until Prince Leopold took office in 1789.

Helwing's son Dietrich (born March 25, 1764 in Lemgo, † December 1832 in Hanover), who had been married to Friederike Ramberg (1779–1846), a daughter of Johann Daniel Ramberg since 1807 , continued the Hanoverian business until his death. His son Friedrich Wilhelm Helwing was the Princely Lippian government director and advisor to Princess Pauline.
