Christian Heinrich Hesemann (born June 27, 1814 in Hanover ; † May 29, 1856 there ) was court sculptor for King Ernst August I of Hanover .

Career

Hesemann received his artistic training from Christian Daniel Rauch in Berlin. In 1838 and 1840 he took part in the exhibitions at the Berlin Academy . After a trip to Italy in 1845, he settled in Hanover. He became a lecturer at the Polytechnic School and a member of the Hanover Art Association . On behalf of Georg V , Hesemann created numerous works of art, including a. the bust and death mask of Carl Friedrich Gauß , the bronze statue of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , the marble busts of Ernst August, Queen Friederike , George V and Queen Marie , as well as the statues of the poetsOvid , Terenz , Sophocles and Horace on the floor of the court theater, today's Hanover Opera House .

The tomb for King Ernst August originally came from the workshop of Christian Daniel Rauch, which Hesemann then created together with Albert Wolff and which was set up in the Welfenmausoleum in the mountain garden of Herrenhausen .

On one of the landmarks of his hometown Hanover, the equestrian statue of King Ernst August in front of the main train station, unveiled on September 21, 1861 , he was able to design the uniform and head as an assistant to the sculptor Albert Wolff.

Hesemann died in Hanover at the age of 41.

Honors

In 1928 Hesemannstrasse in Hanover Groß-Buchholz was named after the sculptor.
