Christian Hieronymus Esmarch (born December 6, 1752 in Böel -Angeln; † May 17, 1820 in Rendsburg ) was a German civil servant who was interested in the literature of his time and became a member of the Hainbund in Göttingen .

Esmarch came from an extensive family of pastors and officials from Schleswig . He attended school in Flensburg , where he was accommodated in the house of the provost Johann Friedrich Boie, the father of Heinrich Christian Boie . In 1770 he studied theology in Kiel , then from 1771 to 1773 in Göttingen . Through Boie he became a member of the Hainbund founded on September 12, 1772. He had a lifelong friendship with Johann Heinrich Voss , whom he met in this circle.

From 1774 to 1781 Esmarch was a private tutor in Copenhagen , and in 1781 he worked for the pension chamber there. He was in contact with the brothers Christian zu Stolberg-Stolberg and Friedrich Leopold Graf zu Stolberg and met in Copenhagen Helfrich Peter Sturz (1736–1799), the private secretary of Count Bernstorff , and the theater critic and poet Knud Lyne Rahbek (1760–1830) know.

There is some evidence that Esmarch was a Freemason - everyone he dealt with was a Freemason, and the Freemason Rahbek spoke of a "faithful brotherly friendship" in the Esmarch necrology . So far, however, no evidence has been found.

From 1783 Esmarch was customs administrator in Kiel-Holtenau on the Schleswig-Holstein Canal , where he communicated with scholars from Kiel. In 1801 he came as a Judicial Council to Rendsburg in the channel supervisory commission.

family

Christian Hieronymus Esmarch married Margaretha Cäcilie Valentiner (1763–1789) in 1784, with whom he had two daughters. After her untimely death he married Friederike Niemann (1762–1840) in 1790. The couple had nine children, six of whom survived childhood. Her two sons Heinrich Carl Esmarch (1792–1863) and Johann Philipp Ernst Esmarch (1794–1875) were temporarily mayors in Rendsburg. Heinrich Carl was elected a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly in May 1848 . Johann Philipp Ernst became father-in-law of Theodor Storm through the marriage of his daughter Helene Constanze Cäcilie (1825–1865) .
