Christian Llewellyn Howes (born February 21, 1972 in Rocky River , Ohio ) is an American jazz violinist and arranger . He also plays the double bass, guitar, viola.

Live and act

Howes grew up in a middle-class area in Columbus and was considered an early talent on the violin . His development suffered a setback when he was sentenced to a heavy jail term for drug offenses, from which he served four years. He then switched from classical music to jazz , moving to New York. He holds a degree in philosophy from Ohio State University . He now lives in Columbus again. After working as an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music , he now teaches from Columbus, including at a Creative Strings workshop since 2003 . He also gave courses at various universities such as Oberlin College .

Howes played with Randy Brecker , Steve Turre , guitarist Joel Harrison , DD Jackson , Greg Osby , Dafnis Prieto , in the Caribbean Jazz Project by Dave Samuels , in Soulgrass by Bill Evans , with Spyro Gyra and the guitarist Les Paul .

Howes recorded several albums, including for Resonance Records : Heartfelt (2008), Out of the Blue (2010), Southern Exposure (2012, with Richard Galliano ) and American Spirit (2015).

In 2011, he won Down Beat's Critics Poll in the Rising Star category for violin and was named Violinist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association .
