Christian III (Oldenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Christian III. von Oldenburg (documented in 1269 in Oldenburg ; † 1285 ibid) was Count of Oldenburg .

Life

Christian III was the son of Johann I. von Oldenburg and Rixa von Hoya . He was first mentioned in a document in 1269 as dei gratia comes in Aldenborch , from 1272 his brother Otto II appears as a co-exhibitor of the count's documents. Her uncle Otto von Oldenburg , abbot of the Rastede monastery, reigned after Johann I's death around 1270 for his underage sons.

The ministerial revolt of the knight Robert von Westerholt took place in the initial phase of his rule . The uprising was supported by Ludolf von Oldenburg-Bruchhausen . In the course of the war, the rebels penetrated the city of Oldenburg, but the city was set on fire by Christian, who was defending Oldenburg Castle, so that the attackers found neither protection nor food and withdrew unsuccessfully. In the battle of the Tungeler Marsch, the count who pursued them won a decisive victory, and Robert was captured alongside other nobles. The Rasteder Chronik describes in detail this victory of the count over his insurgent ministerials.

Christian III is described in the contemporary sources as peace-loving and church-friendly ("the farmers lived in peace and complete tranquility"), who knew how to combine piety with a happy way of life ("loved wine").
