Christian Jakob Zahn (born September 12, 1765 in Althengstett ; † July 8, 1830 ) was a German lawyer, musician, politician and industrialist.

Life

Christian Jakob Zahn was a son of the pastor Johann Christian Zahn and a grandson of the businessman Johann Georg Zahn. After the death of his father in 1772 he moved in with his mother Susanne Sophie, nee. Horn, after Calw . He was supposed to become a theologian and was accepted into the monastery seminar in Bebenhausen , later he studied theology for a semester in Tübingen . He was more interested in law, music and the natural sciences, so he changed his training plans. In 1787 he completed his studies as Dr. jur. with the dissertation De fictionibus iuris Romani ; then he became a lawyer in Stuttgart . He later moved to Calw, where he initially worked as a lawyer.

Together with Johann Friedrich Cotta , whom he had met while studying, he ran the Cotta'sche publishing bookstore in Tübingen from 1789 . Through Cotta he also came into contact with Friedrich Schiller ; a letter from Schiller to Zahn dated May 4, 1795 has been preserved. Schiller suggested to Zahn that they publish the English, Italian, and Spanish literature for the German-speaking audience, but Zahn refused because he felt more competent in other areas. Nevertheless, he was a member of the editorial board of the Horen from 1795 and founded the Allgemeine Zeitung in 1798 .

From 1798, Zahn was a member of the Zeughandelscompagnie Schill und Comp., The successor to the Calwer Compagnie, which had expired in 1797. In addition, from 1809 he was involved in the saffron tannery of his father-in-law Jakob Friedrich Hasenmayer in Hirsau , which he took over completely after his death in 1811.

From 1815 he was a member of the Württemberg state parliament . From 1820 to 1825 he was its vice-president. His successor in office was his son-in-law Johann Georg Doertenbach in 1829 .

Compositions

  • In 1797 Schiller wrote to Zelter , Körner and Zumsteeg and asked them to set some of his songs to music. Through Cotta he received a composition for his equestrian song from Wallenstein's camp , which he liked the most of all the proposals. Since it was signed with Z. , he assumed it came from Zumsteeg, but in fact Christian Jakob Zahn was the composer. This song was especially popular during the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon.
  • In 1797 Christian Jakob Zahn composed the student song And when the swarm got lost, based on a text by Friedrich Adolf Krummacher .
