Christian Klandt (born August 4, 1978 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a German director , screenwriter .

Life

Christian Klandt grew up in the small town of Beeskow in Brandenburg in the Oder-Spree district . As a primary school pupil, he made his first short films on Super 8 and Video 8. Initiated by his German teacher Peter Pikos, a comprehensive 15-year chronicle of the post-reunification period about his home region of Beeskow and the surrounding area was created within a film group.

After finishing school, Klandt first completed the traffic engineering course in Gotha / Thuringia . In 2000 he moved to Berlin , where he worked as an online community editor, later editor-in-chief of an online press service. This was followed by activities as a producer, director, camera and production assistant in various film and television productions as well as in the theater. Klandt is a founding member of Theaterdiscounters Berlin and staged his own programs here. At the same time, Klandt worked for 6 years as a programmer and projectionist in the Berlin art house Filmrauschpalast.

From 2004 to 2012 Klandt studied film and television directing at the University of Film and Television "Konrad Wolf" , today a film university . During his studies he made numerous award-winning short and medium-length films as well as two feature films. At the beginning he made the fairy tale film “Schaustein's Last Film”, which he made together with all 10 courses at the university and which received high recognition at various international / national festivals (including the Hof Film Festival , Around The World In 14 Films and the Grand Jury Prize in South Korea, Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival ). In the second year of his studies, with the support of his professor and mentor Rosa von Praunheim, he made his first full-length feature film “Weltstadt”. In 2006, based on a true story, the film tells the story of two young people who tormented and set fire to a sleeping homeless man in Klandt's hometown of Beeskow.

The demonstrative indifference of the Beeskower after the fact, yes, their stifled approval so outraged Christian Klandt that he courageously decided to filmic confrontation with his own childhood and youth home. Sometimes the film, for which Klandt throws away his finished screenplay in order to reassemble the everyday language together with his actors, comes across as almost documentary: a probe placed in the souls of some people whose boredom, professional hopelessness and family narrowness culminate in the lust for violence .

His debut celebrated great success with national and international critics. It has won numerous awards and has been shown at over 40 film festivals around the world. He received the "Zenith d'argents" in the Montreal World Film Festival competition . In April 2009, German Films celebrated "KINO!" With the support of the Goethe-Institut New York . at Thirty: New Cinema from Germany “30 years of German cinema. For this anniversary "Weltstadt" was invited to the Museum of Modern Art in New York .

The New York Magazine headlined: "Klandt has a keen eye for detail ... he convincingly conveys the mindset of an angry, aimless German youth".

Terranova Magazine, Montréal wrote, “Christian Klandt documents another aspect of a criminal reality. He draws an exact and previously unknown portrait of what is now East Germany and he shows us that life is valuable and crime is horrific. His first feature-length film turns out to be a successful, politically sharp social criticism and, above all, a work of great artistic relevance. "

X Verleih AG brought Weltstadt to German cinemas on November 5th, 2009.

In addition to directing and scripting, Klandt also took over the camera for two documentary film projects: In 2009, filming began on a long-term documentary in South America and on Easter Island , which portrays the world's first metal band to play a concert on Easter Island: " Fahrenheit 212 " Fürstenwalde (Brandenburg). In the same year his film project began with the Berlin homeless theater "Ratten07", which continues to this day.

Klandt's second feature film “ Little Thirteen ” shocked, polarized and touched at the same time. Again based on a true story, the film portrays a lifestyle of social and sexual neglect of children and young people in Germany, far removed from responsibility and perspective.

The film, produced by X Films Creative Pool GmbH in collaboration with ZDF - Das kleine Fernsehspiel, premiered at the Munich Film Festival in 2012 . Leading actress Antonia Putiloff won the actor's award. The film was evaluated at international festivals such as Warsaw, Tallinn Black Nights , and Sao Paulo and received several nominations. Among them: First Steps (No Fear), Studio Hamburg Young Talent Award (best director, production), Filmfest München (best director, script, production) and was in the preselection for the German Film Award.

X Verleih AG released the film in cinemas on July 5, 2012.

In 2015, Klandt received the Robert Bosch Foundation's Grenzgänger scholarship for his international cinema drama “Lilea Rosa” (based on a true story about illegal organ trafficking in children and adolescents in Moldova).

Klandt's third feature film, the chamber play “Leif in Concert - Vol.2” with a prominent cast, premiered on June 29, 2019 at the 37th Munich Film Festival and won the “Best Production” award for Neues Deutsches Kino. A cinematic homage to the neighborhood culture. He tells in small episodes, framed by a day in the life of a waitress, from the microcosm of a cellar bar. The cinema release was originally planned for April 2020 as the opening of the Berlin independent festival “Achtung Berlin”, but had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic and the accompanying nationwide lockdown: On July 16, 2020, the distribution company missingFILMs will start with “Leif in Concert - Vol.2 “in the cinema.

In 2018 and 2019, Klandt took over the direction of the 1st and 2nd season of the youth series " Wir sind Jetzt ". It was published on TVNOW on April 27, 2019 and broadcast on TV for the first time on RTL II from May 20, 2019 . Filming for season 3 is planned for autumn 2020 under Klandt's direction.

Christian Klandt lives in Berlin and has a daughter.
