Christian Lenz

Christian Guido Lenz (born May 11, 1938 in Heidenau (Saxony) near Dresden ) is a German art historian .

biography

Born in Saxony, Lenz moved to the Federal Republic in 1955. In 1958 he graduated from high school and then went to the Navy , where after military exercises he became Korvettenkapitän d. R. was.

In 1960 Lenz began studying art history, classical archeology and German at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and the University of Munich . In 1968 he was with the dissertation Veronese image architecture at Erich Hubala doctorate . He then completed a two-year traineeship with Günter Busch at the Kunsthalle Bremen . In 1970 he married the art historian Angelika Triebig. Their son was born in 1979 and their daughter in 1981.

Between 1970 and 1980 he was a consultant for European painting 1550–1780 at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main . From 1978 he was chairman of the staff council for two years. From 1980 until his retirement in 2003 he worked for the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen . First he was a consultant for German baroque painting at the Alte Pinakothek and for public relations, later for art of the 19th century at the Neue Pinakothek and for the Schack-Galerie . At times he was also a speaker for the Olaf Gulbransson Museum in Tegernsee and for the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel . From 1983 he also became a consultant for the library and the Max Beckmann archive.

In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the University of Würzburg with the thesis “Max Beckmann. The Frankfurt Years ". In 1991 he received his habilitation at the University of Munich and since 1995 has been an adjunct professor for Middle and Modern Art History. Since 1994 he has been the editor of the Max Beckmann Archive. In 1996 he founded the “Freundeskreis Max Beckmann Archiv e. V. "(since 2005" Max Beckmann Gesellschaft eV "). From 2008 to 2019 he was chairman of the Max Beckmann Society . He resigned from the Max Beckmann Society on February 12, 2019.
