Christian Lietzmann (born October 2, 1955 in Görlitz ; † September 2006 ) was a German swimmer who started for the GDR . He was a multiple medal winner at the GDR championships in swimming . In 1974 he became vice-European champion in the 200 and 400 meter medley. In 1972 he took part in the Olympic Games .

Life

Lietzmann was the son of the Görlitz family of drugists Lietzmann (Stern drugstore, Bahnhofstrasse 50 in Görlitz). He had two brothers: Stephan and Matthias. Matthias Lietzmann was a participant in the Junior European Championship in freestyle wrestling.

In Görlitz he attended the 14th high school. From the 5th grade, Christian Lietzmann learned and trained at the competitive sports center in Dresden. He started for the SC Einheit Dresden .

In 1976 he broke his arm several times in an accident and ended his sporting career.

He then learned to be an electronics technician in Görlitz. He worked in innovation in the capacitor factory on Uferstrasse in Görlitz . Water polo was his hobby.

In 1977 he married the swimmer Andrea Hübner . The marriage was divorced after a short time. In 1978 Christian Lietzmann began his military service with the National People's Army of the GDR. He was stationed in Oschatz in a news force. In his second marriage he moved to Werdau and worked underground in the mine at Wismut . His son, who is also called Christian, was born in May 1980. When Bismut stopped work, Lietzmann opened a kiosk with a beer garden.

Controversy

Christian Lietzmann was considered to be little adapted. At a competition in Vienna , he swapped swimming trunks with a USA swimmer right before the competition and started in these USA swimming trunks. As a swimmer in the GDR, that was an absurdity that could not be reconciled with the Cold War era.

Although Lietzmann was successful in sports, he was a heavy smoker with 20 to 40 cigarettes a day.

His lucky charm was a little white mouse that he set down on a starting block before the competition.

In 1974 Lietzmann and swimming star Roger Pyttel climbed from the outside onto the first platform of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The security guard intervened and he was interrogated by the police, which is why his flight back from Paris to Berlin was delayed by six hours. Lietzmann was at that time with a swimming selection for the international competition in France.
