life and work

Christian Oehler was born in March 1909 as the third child of the decorative painter Christian Oehler († 1942) and Elisabeth Zweifel († 1950) from Glarus in the Stuttgart district of Cannstatt, where he attended elementary school from 1916 to 1924. He then began an apprenticeship in a painting workshop in Cannstatt, which he completed in the spring of 1927 with the journeyman's examination. In 1932 he began studying art at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Alexander Eckener and Anton Kolig , which he completed in 1938 as a master student of Heinrich Altherr , who had the most lasting influence on the young Oehler of all teachers.

In 1940 Oehler was drafted into military service; his pictures stored in Berlin burned in an air raid, the studio in Stuttgart was destroyed in a bomb attack in 1944. On November 7, 1986 Christian Oehler died in a retirement home in Netstal and was buried in the cemetery in Glarus.
