Christian Zgoll

Christian Zgoll (* 1969 in Hof (Saale) ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1988 at the Jean-Paul-Gymnasium Hof , he did military service from 1988 to 1989 . From 1990 to 1997 he studied philosophy , Latin and the Catholic religion to become a teacher at the Universities of Würzburg and Munich . From 1993 to 1997 he was a scholarship holder in the basic funding of the Cusanuswerk . He passed the state examination in 1997 in Latin, cath. Religion and Education at the University of Munich (LMU) with distinction. From 1998 to 2001 he did a doctoral degreeLatin Philology, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages, Old Testament Exegesis at the University of Munich (LMU). From 1998 to 2001 he was a scholarship holder in the Cusanuswerk's graduate program. After completing his doctorate in 2002 ( Rigorosum ) summa cum laude with the dissertation Phenomenology of Metamorphosis. Metamorphoses and related things in Augustan poetry , he was a research assistant at the Chair for Medieval and Byzantine History at the University of Leipzig from 2003 to 2004 . From 2005 to 2007 he was teaching at the Institute for Classical Philology and Comparative Literature in Leipzig . From 2007 to 2008 he was a research assistant at the Chair of Greek Studies at the University of Leipzig. From 2008 to 2009 he was executive assistant at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Göttingen . Since 2009 he has been a member of the "Göttingen Friends of Ancient Literature" association at the Department of Classical Philology in Göttingen . From 2009 to 2011 he was the coordinator of the research and edition project SAPERE at the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . Since 2011 he has headed the interdisciplinary research group on ancient myths Collegium Mythologicum . Since 2012 he has been teaching Greek and Latin at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Göttingen. He has been a member of the Mommsen Society since 2013 . He has been a member of the German Classical Philology Association since 2013 . He has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Tusculum Collection since 2014 . Since 2015 he has been an Important Investigator of the DFG- funded research group STRATA - Stratification Analyzes of Mythical Materials and Texts in Antiquity (FOR 2064). Since 2016 he has been a member of the comparative literature department at the Department of German Philology at the University of Göttingen. In 2016 he submitted his habilitation thesis . After his habilitation in 2017 and venia legendi in the fields of Classical Philology and Comparative Literature, he has been teaching Hittite at the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Göttingen since 2018 .

His main research interests are Latin poetry of the Augustan period, Latin metrics, theory and methodology for transmedia analysis, interpretation and comparative analysis of (ancient) myths, Greek archaic poetry and comparative studies with a view to the ancient Orient, Hittite language and culture, and ancient and Byzantine history and mentality history.

Christian Zgoll has been married to the ancient orientalist Annette Zgoll since 1997 (3 children), with whom he established a comprehensive theory and method of myth research and researched it in various research associations.
