Christiane Conrad

Christiane Conrad (* 1949 in Gießen ) is a German painter who deals with monochrome painting .

Life

Christiane Conrad was born in Gießen in 1949. From 1984 to 1990 she studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts . In 1990 she was recognized as a master class student by Walter Stöhrer . Christiane Conrad is a member of the German Association of Artists and lives and works in Berlin.

Artistic work

Into the outdoors - Pink , 2013, oil on canvas, 150 × 140 cm

In 1992 she decided to paint in monochrome because she wanted to concentrate entirely on the subject of color and its effect. She works with oil paints , which she mixes from several shades and applies to the canvas with a spatula instead of a brush.

The color is in their structure thickly applied and is applied by it in vertical bands of color on the screen, some of the filler bar extends beyond the surface.

With each layer she applies a new variant of the chosen color - up to ten layers in a single work. Both the different color strips and the different nuances of the color shade create a kind of flat relief on the canvas: Since these material edges form a relief, they are seen differently depending on the incidence of light and the point of view: the relief edge can be perceived as such, as Ridge, but just as this ridge can be so strongly marked by light or shadow that we perceive a line of light or a shadow line because it is strongly illuminated or darkened when the light falls at an angle. This enables a negative-positive change: the light drawing can turn into a shadow drawing, or, more radically, the elevation can become visible as a depression: then the ridges appear as cracks or breaks in the color surface.

On the one hand, the individual work - when looking at the total area - exudes a lot of calm due to the restriction to one color. On the other hand - in a detailed look at the surface of the respective picture - vibrations become visible that play with the phenomenon of perception and change constantly when viewed from different angles or different light and space conditions and thus creatively contradict the supposed calm.

The museum projects

Exhibition Mo-No-Chrom , Mies van der Rohe Haus, Berlin 2010, room view: The blue , light blue gray , 2010, each 150 × 140 cm, oil on canvas
The specific works series is a recurring campaign by the museum, to which other artists such as Ben Vautier , Werner Reiterer Ute Heuer and AK Dolven have made contributions. Conrad created a total of 18 small and 2 large formats as a reflection of the large-format works by the painter Icke Winzer and the sculptures by the sculptor Rachel Whiteread already on display there . To do this, she studied the works of the two artists in detail. Your decision to design your works in different shades of blue-gray is a reflection of the color tones in the works of Icke Winzer and Rachel Whiteread and the architecture of room 1.14. By concentrating on a single color with different nuances, the works seem like a kind of accentuation of the colors used by the two artists and form a kind of musical repetition and paraphrasing of what has been seen. The presence of the series for room 1.14 is both a dialogue and an independent group of works.
For the Mies von der Rohe Haus in Berlin, she designed a 7-part series in the colors of the light reflections from the garden, which are reflected on the walls. The first work in blue is a reference to the idyllic surroundings of the museum located on a lake. Christiane Conrad: I was looking for colors that reflect the transparency of the house. According to my observations, there is no real boundary between the interior and the garden. I'm interested in what happens in terms of color in the interior. On closer inspection, very light color nuances become visible on the white walls of the interior. The green of the small walnut tree on the terrace and the garden seem to create hardly visible pastel-colored reflections on the walls. For me this adds to the atmosphere of the house.

In the picture gallery of the Angermuseum in Erfurt there are mainly works by landscape painters such as Friedrich Nerly , Erich Heckel , Carl Hummel , Carl Schuch and Paul Baum . In her works specially created for the exhibition, Conrad resorted to the central color of these individual works and translated them into her monochrome painting. The director of the museum, Kai Uwe Schierz, explains the interaction of the two very different levels of art on the viewer: Stand in front of the monochrome field paintings, soak up the paint, get used to their sight. Then take two steps to the side and look at the Hummel picture: And? "You see the sky differently," says the director; the sky of Hummel. The green components on the left and the blue components on the right interact with Conrad's canvases.
