Christiane Ufholz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christiane Ufholz , b. Wunder (born September 1, 1947 in Leipzig ) is a German rock , jazz and blues singer . She lived in the GDR until 1976 , where she was one of the most important vocalists and performed with well-known musicians. After the reunification in the GDR she was able to build on her earlier successes.

Musical development

As a child, Christiane Ufholz sang in the Leipziger Rundfunk children's choir for ten years . After finishing school, she learned the trade of a hairdresser.

She began her career as a rock singer with the Butlers , an amateur band from Leipzig founded by Klaus Renft . After the band was banned, which triggered the “ Leipziger Beatdemo ”, Christiane Ufholz switched to Studio Team Leipzig , an amateur band in which Uschi Brüning and Regine Dobberschütz also sang for a while.

From 1972 Christiane Ufholz sang with the Dresden Septet , a jazz rock band led by Gerhard Zachar , from which Lift emerged a year later . At that time, Lift played blues, soul and gospel and was shaped by the singing of Stephan Trepte and Christiane Ufholz. Together with the band, she recorded several singles for the GDR record label Amiga between 1973 and 1975 . During the years of working with musicians like Franz Bartzsch , Stephan Trepte, Till Patzer and Wolfgang Scheffler, she had matured musically and developed into a professional singer when Klaus Lenz noticed her.

In 1975 she went on tour with one of the Klaus Lenz Big Bands and recorded another record with the band. In the meantime she had made a name for herself as a jazz singer and in 1976 Günther Fischer brought her to his sextet as a guest soloist. Together with Fischer and Manfred Krug she gave several concerts, accompanied Krug in a song on his LP You are like new today and sang in the DEFA film Hostess by Rolf Römer based on compositions by Günther Fischer .

In the same year Christiane Ufholz moved to the Federal Republic of Germany after, as one of the first signatories, she protested in an open letter against Wolf Biermann's expatriation . When she left the GDR, her career was over for the time being and she went back to the hairdressing profession.

1980 Eberhard Klunker and Olaf Wegner founded the band Windminister . The two musicians played in the Hansi Biebl Blues Band until their flight from the GDR in 1975 , which was banned after their escape. The former singer of the Klaus Renft Combo , Thomas Monster Schoppe , Klaus Renft and Christiane Ufholz also belonged to Windminister . The band project turned out to be not particularly successful, so that the three left the band after a short time. Klunker and Wegner kept the band name and continued as a guitar duo. After the fall of the Wall in the GDR, there was renewed cooperation between the Wind Minister and Christiane Ufholz. Together they went on tour in the new federal states and were so successful that Christiane Ufholz started her comeback.

Klaus Renft also went back to the "East" in the early 1990s and started his "... as if nothing had happened" tour in 1997/1998 and was accompanied by Peter Cäsar Gläser , Gerulf Pannach and Christiane Ufholz. At the birthday concert for Klaus Renft's 60th birthday and the commemorative concert for the 40th anniversary of the “ Leipzig Beatdemo ” in October 2005, she was on stage with him again. On November 21, 2006, she attended his funeral and performed together with Hans-Jürgen Beyer , the Renft band and Caesar's player at the Klaus Renft memorial concert: "There was a time ...".

From 2002 to 2009 Christiane Ufholz worked with the Jonathan Blues Band and gave regular concerts again (for example “East Blues Session” at the Köpenicker Blues and Jazz Festival in Berlin and the Rostock International Blues Festival).

Since 2009 Christiane Ufholz has mainly performed with the guitarist Eberhard Klunker. The duo's CD LIVE 2010 was released in January 2011 .
