Christ the King (Hemer)
Christ the King is one of five Roman Catholic parish churches in the city of Hemer . The building dates back to 1966 and, with its characteristic, wide bell tower, shapes the image of Hemeran's city center. In 2019 it was entered in the city's list of monuments . The congregation is part of the Hemer Pastoral Association and is part of the Märkisches Sauerland deanery in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
history
In the spring of 1962 the Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul started a tender for a new church in Hemer-Mitte, in which six architects participated. The first prize went to the Mannheim construction director Richard Jörg , the second prize went to Hermann-Josef Geismann from Hemer . The church council then decided that the church should be built by both architects in a joint venture. On December 10, 1966, Bishop Paul Nordhues consecrated the church. A few years later, a community center was built at the foot of the church building.

The most striking part of the church is the 30-meter-high and 13-meter-wide tower wall, the front view of which faces Hemeraner Hauptstrasse. In order not to obstruct the view from the city center of the forest and meadow areas behind, the tower was constructed as a framework.
According to the architect's plans, the focus of the interior is on the altar . The benches are arranged in a semicircle around him up to a distance of 16 meters. Thanks to the circular glass elements in the ceiling around the chancel, this area also has a stronger effect of daylight than the rest of the church. Behind the altar is the tabernacle , which is framed by two stained glass windows . This means that this room also remains somewhat darkened compared to the altar.

Bells
Christ the King has three bells that were cast on October 3rd, 1966 by the bell foundry Mark & Sohn in Brockscheid . The consecration of the bells took place on October 16, so that the bells could already be used for the consecration of the church. Domkapellmeister Paul Schuh described the ringing of the bells as "extremely well done". An overview:

organ
The Christ the King Church was completed in 1966. Initially the community made do with a harmonium and from 1967 with an interim organ. This instrument from the Gehrden monastery church was formerly a two-manual organ, of which only a wind chest with 10 registers was left. In 1972 a new organ was commissioned. Werner Hoffmann from Hemer designed the housing and the disposition . From the old organ he was able to determine five stops for the new organ. The factory was built in the Stockmann brothers' workshop for organ building in Werl. The organ has 20 registers, divided into main work, swell and pedal . System: abrasive loading, mechanical key action, electric key action . Playing aids: three normal paddocks , two free combinations, one pedal combination, individual storage. The organ was consecrated in a festive service on September 17th, 1972. On the afternoon of the consecration day, Gerhard Naprstek from Schwerte played an organ concert. The disposition : (page 92)

Church life
In 1970 the parish opened the Christkönig Kindergarten , which it still operates today. A total of 75 boys and girls are cared for in three groups. In the community there is a group of the Catholic women's community with over 100 members, a meeting point for women and a group of ten volunteer Caritas employees.
