The Christ the King's Church in Bolzano is a Roman Catholic church built in the simple neo-Romanesque basilica style in the Gries-Quirein district between 1938 and 1940 .

It was built according to a design by the architect Guido Pelizzari and is set back on the east side of a square-like bulge of today's Italy Allee (at the time of fascism : Julius-Cäsar-Allee). A Dominican convent is attached to the church , which is also responsible for the Italian-speaking pastoral care . The towering church tower in the style of Ravenna-Venetian churches was only added in the post-war period, again based on a project by Pelizzari.

The building corresponds functionally with the former fascist party building and the courthouse, which were erected at about the same time , each diagonally opposite. The architectural ensemble flanked one of the central urban routes of the new "Greater Bozen" conceived by Italian fascism as part of its Italianization policy in South Tyrol and was designed as a symbolic triumvirate of political, judicial and ideological-religious power. To this day, the area remains legible in terms of urban space as a condensed place where the control power and claim to rule of the totalitarian state are architecturally visible.

Furnishing

At the front of the church there is a stone relief depicting the Divine Trinity , a group of sculptures by Ignaz Gabloner , which he made in 1939/40.

Inside the church, Franz Lenhart u. a. In the end of the left aisle in 1941 a monumental fresco depicting the House of Savoy and the Turin shroud .
