biography

From the beginning of the 1950s, Staffner took part in junior races and regional competitions. She celebrated her first major success in 1957 when she won the giant slalom on the Stilfserjoch , which she repeated in 1959. Also in 1959 she won a giant slalom in Obergurgl . She was accepted into the Austrian national team and achieved numerous podium places in the next few years. In 1960 she achieved a second place in the Parsenn Derby in Davos and in the giant slalom in Innsbruck , in 1961 a second place in the slalom in Méribel and third place in the slalom in San Martino di Castrozza and in the giant slalom in Lenggries . At the Hahnenkamm races, held for the last time for women in her hometown of Kitzbühel , she finished sixth in slalom and combined in 1961.

In the winter of 1962, Staffner's best results were second places in the slalom and combination of Val Gardena . In addition, she achieved only a few top 10 results, which is why she was not used at the 1962 World Cup . In the 1962/1963 season, Staffner took third places in the slalom from Spittal an der Drau and in the departure of the Olympic dress rehearsal in the Axamer Lizum , but because the next winter in the run-up to the 1964 Winter Olympics she was largely unable to achieve top placings once again failed to qualify for a major event in the then strong Austrian women's team. Staffner, however, was given the honor of carrying the Olympic flame to the Bergisel Stadium in Innsbruck at the opening ceremony , where she presented the torch to Josef Rieder .

Staffner ended her career at the end of the 1963/1964 season. She went to the United States and worked there as a ski instructor. In 1964 or 1965 (both dates are given) she set a new speed record for women on skis in Cervinia . After returning to Austria in the late 1960s, she married a lawyer. The couple have a son and a daughter. The daughter Birgit Herbert (* 1975) was a successful snowboarder in the 1990s and early 2000s . Christl Herbert-Staffner took part successfully in Masters ski races for some time, but also practiced cross-country skiing and started, among other things, in the Koasalauf .
