Christofberg Cross

Christofberg Chapel

At around 947 m above sea level, just a few meters from the 957 m high summit of Christofberg, you will find the Christofberg Cross on long-distance hiking trail 06 in the middle of the forest at a fork in the road. It consists of a simple block of larch and a back wall made of boards with a wooden gable roof .

Wolf pit

At the foot of the Christofberg after leaving St. Filippen there is one of the few well-preserved wolf pits in Carinthia. Historians estimate that it dates back to the 18th century and was used as a trap, where branches were placed across the pit and a piece of meat was placed in the middle to bait the wolf.

Hiking trails

From the summit there are many opportunities for cultural hikes . On the one hand, you can hike westwards from the small car park below the Christofberg Church to the Magdalensberg (church, archaeological park). Halfway up the path there branches off to the right to the north and a hiking trail to Hochosterwitz Castle . On the other hand, a hiking trail runs from the summit, past the dilapidated property known as Wartschler, which is about halfway there, to the Lippekogel, where stone benches invite you to rest. Under the summit of the Lippekogel, numerous millstones from the Steinbruchkogel can be viewed near the popular Mothe in Oberkrähwald. From there, a road, or optionally a footpath, leads down into the valley to Brückl .

If you don't want to hike any further, but want to go straight back to St. Filippen , you can either take the same path as the ascent or walk back along the asphalt road, which you can comfortably follow downhill to St. Filippen. After the third bend there is the Gutshof vulgo Kulnighof , through which a hiking trail (former forest transport road) leads to St. Filippen.

legend

King Matthias Corvinus

A carter from St. Jakob im Rosentale once returned home with a load of wine from Hungary. As he drives below a large mountain through a large forest, he sees a house half built into the rock, the roof of which barely protrudes from the mountain. In front of the door stands a stately knight, girded with a sword, and asks the carter: “Friend, you are from our upper regions; Tell me, do the ants keep climbing the three peaks, the St. Christofberg, Magdalensberg and Urichsberg? ”-“ They are still going up, but less and less. ”-“ Say at home: when faith will wane to the point that nobody goes to the three peaks, then I will appear with my black crowd. ”-“ Who are you? ”asked the carter. - “I am King Matthias Corvinus. Step closer and go with me into this house so that you can see for yourself! ”The man obeyed and King Matthias said:“ Step behind me and look over my right shoulder through this window! ”He did as he was told and saw a plain, long and wide. She was covered over and over with armed warriors who slept motionless and quietly next to their horses. "Well, that's the black crowd," said the king to the astonished man; “Look through the window again!” Matthias gently grabbed his saber and pulled it a little out of its sheath. And see! The whole army came to life. The warriors raised their heads, the horses shook their manes, neighed, and stamped their hooves. "Well, have you seen it?" Continued the king; “It won't be long before I get up and draw my saber. Tepid air will blow and inspire everyone with a thought. My warriors will mount their horses, then the holy battle for the true faith will break out. "
