Christoph Gundermann
Christoph Gundermann (* 1549 in Kahla ; † January 5, 1622 in Neustadt an der Haardt ) was a German Reformed theologian.
Life
Gundermann studied 1569–1571 at the University of Wittenberg . In 1571 Gundermann was the rector of the Martinischule in Halberstadt and later (before 1583) worked in the same position in Riddagshausen (Braunschweig). In 1583 he returned to Halberstadt as pastor at St. Martini and in 1584 was appointed court preacher. In 1590 he received his Lic. Theol. From the University of Wittenberg . and in 1591 Dr. theol. PhD.
1590 was Gundermann pastor at St. Thomas in Leipzig and taught at the same time until 1591 as professor of theology at the local university . As a Calvinist, Gundermann campaigned for the abolition of exorcism in baptism . After the early death of the Saxon Elector Christian I in 1591, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm I took over the affairs of state for his still underage son ( Christian II ). In matters of faith, the Orthodox Lutherans were again in charge. The followers of Calvinism were removed from all offices and persecuted, including Gundermann. On November 15, 1591 he was arrested in his apartment and arrested as a " cryptocalvinist " in the Pleißenburg . Only by revoking his doctrine could he avoid an execution. He had to commit himself in a document not to teach against the Augsburg Confession , the Schmalkaldic Articles and the Concord formula , and also lost his university post and had to resign from his ministry. During his imprisonment his first wife Ottilie (née Fischer) committed suicide on January 24, 1592.
After his release in 1592, Gundermann returned briefly to his brother's house in his hometown of Kahla, but in the same year he held the position of Reformed pastor at St. Peter's Church in Heidelberg . In 1595 he moved to Neustadt ad Haardt as pastor and superintendent .
