Chris Walton

Chris Walton (born Christopher Robert Walton on July 6, 1963 in Billingham , England ) is a British music historian who has made a name for himself with his work on Swiss music history.

Life

Walton studied musicology at Gonville and Caius College , Cambridge and received his PhD from Christ Church College , Oxford. He was a federal scholarship holder at the University of Zurich and a research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Munich .

From 1990 to 2001 Walton was head of the music department of the Zurich Central Library . 1998–2000 he was a lecturer for music history at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , 2001–2008 professor for music history at the University of Pretoria . From 2008 to 2011 he was administrative director of the Sinfonie Orchester Biel , since 2011 he has been a lecturer in music history at the Basel University of Music, since 2015 also a research assistant at the Bern University of the Arts and since 2017 honorary professor at the Africa Open Institute at Stellenbosch University .

Walton has published several times on the history of music in Switzerland, including on Othmar Schoeck , Heinrich Sutermeister , Erich Schmid , Hans Schaeuble , Czesław Marek , Adolf Brunner , Mathilde Wesendonck , Franz Xaver Schnyder von Wartensee , Marcel Sulzberger and Räto Tschupp . As a CD producer, he put around 20 Swiss composers on CD for the first time. For 20 years he has been working as a translator in the Swiss economy, music and film scene.

Walton is married and has two daughters and one son.
