Chung Un-chan ( Korean 정운찬 ) (born March 21, 1947 in Gongju ) is a South Korean politician . From 2009 to 2010 he was the 40th Prime Minister of South Korea .
Life
Chung Un-chan was Professor of Economics at Seoul National University (SNU) from 1978 to 2009 . From 2002 to 2006 he served as its president.
Academic career
In 1970 he graduated from the SNU his Bachelor Accounts in Economics, the Master he joined in 1972 at Miami University in Ohio from. In 1978 Chung received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University . In 1983 he was an associate professor at the University of Hawaii and visiting professor at the London School of Economics and at the Ruhr University in Bochum from 1986 to 1987 and 1999, respectively. In 2002 he became dean at the University of Social Sciences. He received an honorary doctorate from the Russian Far Eastern State University in Vladivostok in October 2004.
Political career
Chung was listed as a top candidate for the Yeollin-uri ( 열린 우리당 , Yeollin-uri-dang, Our Open Party) party for the 2007 presidential election , but he did not join the party.
The winner of the 2007 presidential election, Lee Myung-bak of the Hannara Party ( 한나라당 , Hannara-dang, Grand National Party) named him the second Prime Minister of his term in 2009 to succeed Han Seung-soo . On September 29, 2009, the South Korean parliament approved the appointment. In September 2009, Chung declared the planned construction of Sejong City to be inefficient and, together with President Lee Myung-bak, proposed an alternative construction. However, the South Korean parliament later overturned this proposal, whereupon Chung resigned on August 10, 2010 after only ten months in office. Previously, corruption allegations had been raised against him at a parliamentary hearing.
Private
Chung is a baseball fan. He is a fan of the Doosan Bears and the New York Yankees .
