Ciggiano is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Civitella in Val di Chiana in the province of Arezzo in Tuscany .
geography
The place is about 6 km south of the main town Civitella in Val di Chiana, about 18 km southwest of the provincial capital Arezzo and about 60 km southeast of the regional capital Florence in the Chiana Valley . The Chiana Canal is about 10 km east of Ciggiano. The place is at 359 m slm and had 508 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 610 inhabitants. In 1833 there were 634 inhabitants. The closest place is Monte San Savino , it is about 4 km south.
history
The area of today's Ciggiano was settled for the first time by the Umbrians and the Etruscans . Later, due to the development of the settlement in Siena, the Romans settled here . The castle dates from the Middle Ages and is still recognizable in its shape as the main square, Piazza Alta . Fragments of the fortification walls have also been preserved. In May 1431 the place was taken by Niccolò Piccinino . In 1461 the statutes for traders of the Republic of Florence indicated the place as a mandatory customs post.

- Museo della vite e del vino , viticulture museum in the town center on the Piazza Alta. The museum was inaugurated in 2009 and is located in the old mill (Vecchio Mulino).
- Oratorio della Madonna della Costanella , also Madonna della Costarella , oratorio just outside the town center.
traffic
The next connection point for long-distance traffic on the A1 motorway is at Monte San Savino , about 5 km southeast of Ciggiano. The Arezzo junction is about 10 km northeast.
