Cinema in the Ostertor
The Cinema im Ostertor , formerly Cinema Ostertor , is a cinema founded on November 7, 1969 as the first art house cinema in Germany on Ostertorsteinweg in Bremen , district Ostertor , the so-called quarter .
The house (No. 105) belongs to the listed residential group Ostertorsteinweg 100 to 107 .
history
Gretel and Otto Draber ran today's cinema from 1934 to 1969 as chamber light plays. They maintained cinemas in Hamburg and Bremen (including the former Concordia cinema in Schwachhausen ).
The founding members of Cinema im Ostertor were Gert Settje († May 9, 2012, managing director of Lila Eule in the 1960s ), Lore Bertuleit, Hero Burmeister, Manfred Lohrengel , Robert Francke , Konrad Huchting and Jürgen Behrends. Since it was founded, the cinema has received more than 50 federal film program awards and cinema program awards. It has felt an obligation to committed and culturally demanding film since it was founded. It has a cinema with 134 seats.
The cinema was involved in the founding of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kino (AG Kino) in Hamburg on February 17, 1972 , a nationwide network of currently over 300 independent cinemas with over 550 screens (as of March 2020). The network was founded for the purpose of offering self-help and mutual support in finding lost films , researching new discoveries, designing program series and representing the interests of film distributors and the established cinema industry. In 2003 the AG Kino joined forces with the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater e. V. to form the Working Group Cinema - Guild of German Film Art Theaters .
In 1973 Gert Settje and Reinhold Garske founded the Bremer Kommunalkino, which was located in the cinema until he moved to Walle in 1993. As part of this collaboration, the communal cinema showed films in the cinema premises. On May 7, 1974, the first communal cinema film was shown in the Cinema Ostertor Kuhle Wampe or: Who Owns the World? shown. This cooperation ended in 1993 when the communal cinema moved into its own cinema, Kino 46 in Bremen-Walle , and thus had its own premises.
The current operators of the cinema are the children of Gert Settje: Andrea and Thomas Settje, as Settje GbR . Since March 21, 2013, the program planning and production has been carried out by the Bremen Film Art Theaters, which already include three other Bremen art house cinemas.
The cinema has been operating independently again since 2017 and is still operated by the Settje family.
Trivia
The Ostertor cinema is mentioned in Sven Regener's novel Neue Vahr Süd , as the shared apartment of the protagonist Frank Lehmann was located above the Ostertor cinema in the same building. The filming of Neue Vahr Süd was shot in May 2010 in the Ostertorviertel. For this purpose, the cinema was closed for two days. a. the facade of the house was temporarily redesigned to give it the appearance of the early 1980s.
